A watercolor with plants. Juniper, Autumn Joy sedum, and native boneset. Although the boneset is typically found in wetter soils, its seeds were perfectly happy to germinate in this dry space. And the pollinators couldn't be happier!

A summer perennial vignette with longevity. This combination of Echinacea, Helianthus, Calamagrostis and Hydrangea arborescens has been going strong since early June. As we head into August, this combination shows only faint signs of slowing down.

This is a major view for us as friends and family approach the side entrance of the house and, from another angle, this garden is the main view from our kitchen so we can watch the color, movement and pollinators all summer long.

Back to reality after eight dreamy days in Morocco! The architecture, landscapes, and details throughout daily life were truly inspiring, both personally and professionally.

From Bahia Palace and Le Jardin Secret in Marrakesh through Medjool date farms and the mars-like landscapes of the southern Atlas Mountains to Mhamid and the start of the Sahara desert, we saw wildly different sides of north Africa.

After settling into our riad within the Medina of Marrakesh and visiting the colorful Le Jardin Marjorelle, we wrapped up our stay with a day trip through the verdant hillsides and poppy fields of the northern Atlas Mountains to Ouzoud Waterfalls, showing yet another side of this beautiful country.

The incredibly fresh food and intoxicating scents of spices and incense added to the whole dreamy experience.

As we head into design workshop season, I encourage my classes to observe and note what is happening on their sites as part of the site analysis. Watching how snow melts or where puddles collect can tell one a lot about sun/shade patterns, drainage, and microclimates within a site.

If you have a couple of minutes today, take a walk around your yard and connect with your gardens in a new way- through passive observation.

Wow... The Southern Company in Willow Grove nailed this pool furniture restoration! This vintage @tropitonefurniture furniture has been with this house since the mid-1960's and has held up incredibly well over the last 60 years. By restoring the furniture rather than replacing it, we are minimizing our environmental footprint, plus it's such a vibe! With a fresh coat of paint and new vinyl straps, we're ready for pool season 2025!

I absolutely love this new stone wall crafted by the team at @couturegrounds !

To enhance my aging client's new deck, I designed extremely low-maintenance gardens around the back foundation for them to enjoy without much fuss. Evergreen shrubs and lots of summer color will make this a beautiful space year-round, but the real star of this project is the new stone retaining wall built to replace old railroad ties. @yourdirtydesigner selected a custom blend of stone veneer to compliment the front stonework and the edge of each cap was then hand-chiseled to accommodate curves in the wall. I (and the client) couldn't be happier with the results!

It's been a minute, but only because designs and consultations are in full swing and all spare seconds go to tinkering at home!

This is my tiny blueberry patch which is on a gentle hill, but has enough pitch to wash out mulch and soil during heavy rain. My solution? To slow runoff through the patch, I've interplanted Pacera aurea to colonize and hold the soil around my shrubs. Having two plants blooming simultaneously should also attract more pollinators and increase fruit production, while the evergreen foliage will keep the soil covered even in the dormant season. Plus, it's really pretty!

A meadow is in the works uphill to further slow runoff, but I'm feeling good about this new plant combo for the time being.

It's been a minute, but only because designs and consultations are in full swing and all spare seconds go to tinkering at home!

This is my tiny blueberry patch which is on a gentle hill, but has enough pitch to wash out mulch and soil during heavy rain. My solution? To slow runoff through the patch, I've interplanted Pacera aurea to colonize and hold the soil around my shrubs. Having two plants blooming simultaneously should also attract more pollinators and increase fruit production, while the evergreen foliage will keep the soil covered even in the dormant season. Plus, it's really pretty!

A meadow is in the works uphill to further slow runoff, but I'm feeling good about this new plant combo for the time being.

This design has been a labor of love, working hard to find that balance of woodland-meets-showy-pollinator-gardens. I wanted to honor the natural environment that the home is nestled within but also provide the more traditional landscape elements the client requested (all while supporting wildlife and managing stormwater!). I think with some minor tweaks to the layout during install, this design will exceed all of our goals!

Obligatory "first real snow" pic... Who else needed this day? For me, it was beautiful and healing to play in the snow with my kids for literal hours. It was a day of memories for sure!

And the icing on the cake? Seeing my gardens take on a new shape under the snow. Compared to 2022, so many of my plants are in new locations or more mature, and many of my gardens are larger now. I leave my perennials up in the fall for birds and insects, but also for the winter interest for myself and boy was that satisfying today!

This was one of my first projects after starting Athyrium Design. It was small but full of opportunity and three years later, it's safe to say we nailed it!

Here, I paired permeable pavers with a wood deck and suckering shrubs to infiltrate rainwater and prevent runoff onto the neighboring property. I mixed native shrubs and perennials with select non-natives for year-round color and texture. The meandering walkway adds length and contemporary shape to this urban backyard.

The homeowners did a fantastic job with install, maintenance, and decor.

A huge thanks to them for referring me to design the family beach house landscape. Her parents now have a new hobby which she says "is the greatest gift you can give someone". 💯

I just ran out to replace the 7 Sun Golds I ate that my kids picked.... an hour later I'm back with 2 dozen red tomatoes, 50 peppers, 1.5 cukes, an eggplant and was also able to replace the 7 Sun Golds
